She's in the upcoming 'Cyrus' (release June 18) with Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly. Tomei plays Hill's mother. About her character's unusually close relationship with her son Tomei says:
"I wasn't reading it going, 'Oh, this is really unhealthy. How am I going to play this unhealthy person?' " she says. "And so I approached it in the sense that they're great friends. They have a great relationship. They truly enjoy each other's company, and they've lived a very artsy and more bohemian kind of life. And they laugh well together. So I just saw it as more really great friends. And that part of it is really healthy."
Frankly, this makes me want to see the movie even more. The disturbing energy between Hill and Reilly's character was a draw in itself, but it felt so mainstream. A sort of tacked-on conflict used to spice up an otherwise run-of-the-mill rom-com. But this tidbit ups the ante. Tomei is so good handling characters with dents and dings. Can't wait to see what's going on here.
NPR has three clips from 'Cyrus'.
