The Coen brothers’ go-to cinematographer has been nominated for nine Oscars over 16 years, for films that include The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and No Country for Old Men, but he’s never clinched a win. And while Deakins brushes off this bewildering oversight—“I’m fortunate I get to make these films,” he says—industry insiders do not. As the L.A.
