'Dead Man Down' Featurette

I like everything about this movie. Great title, for instance. Love that -- Dead Man Down -- has a ring to it.

The cast works. In the footage I've seen Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace click, and don't look like they're in a scene. Terrence Howard brings a weird cool edge as the bad guy -- should be interesting.

That it's directed by Niels Arden Oplev (original adaptation of Dragon Tattoo) is so right for this kind of story. Oplev is directing the upcoming TV series 'Under the Dome', based on Stephen King's story. I'd dismissed this until I heard Oplev was behind the camera. Now, I'll probably watch.

Writer JH Wyman brings that edge -- he's done Fringe and the twisty 'The Mexican' -- and is working with JJ Abrams on a TV sci-fi movie (slash) pilot. That should be endorsement enough.

Chewy Trailer for 'Dead Man Down'

From Niels Arden Oplev who directed the original adaptation of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', written by J.H. Wyman (The Mexican, Fringe) who specializes in twisty tales.

With Noomi Rapace, Colin Farrell, Dominic Cooper, Isabelle Huppert, and Terrence Howard.

Looks very good. Visually dynamic without looking like it's trying. Cool premise. Story looks to have a spine. Very chewy.

Click Click Red Band Trailer for 'Seven Psychopaths'

Just goes to show what a good director (that would Martin McDonagh, 'In Bruges') can do. Everything here just works. You expect it to be self-conscious, cliche, phoned-in, but it's good.

And, hard to believe, every moment is your favorite. Woody Harrelson's manic hood is cute and plays, well, real -- you hang on every word. Christopher Walken is always solid but here he rises above (don't ask how). Sam Rockwell is pure money. Gabourey Sidibe delivers, like don't even think about it. And Colin Farrell is just so, even with lines that would make other actors look silly he just shines. Tom Waits turns what seems like a toss away scene into something fun and worth watching.

These performances, these line readings, could be lifted from an awards contender. Every gesture, each tick, is informed by the actor's soul. You almost never get that even from high profile dramas.

Yeah, good direction. This script might have yielded a trite wooden snoozer but McDonagh got some great performances and brought it all to life.

Good stuff. Can't wait.

New 'Total Recall' Featurette

As I've said, these guys -- Len Wiseman, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale -- believe in this movie. You can see it when they comment. Especially Colin Farrell. Here, he says, "It's a lot of fun, man. Really, it's a lot of fun. I actually can't wait to spend two hours watching this." He means it. That's so rare in these junket interviews and featurettes.

The more I see of 'Total Recall' the more I think they may have raised the bar.

'Total Recall' Featurette Plays an Ace

Folks have been a tad guarded about this and I suppose that's just so. However, (I may be dreaming) but there's something about the way Kate Beckinsale, Colin Farrell, and Jessica Biel (and producer Neal Moritz and director Len Wiseman) talk about the movie that speaks of confidence. These guys know it's locked down and are sincere in their descriptions. And, really, you don't see that a lot. Actors try, but you can see through it.

For instance, Farrell at 2:21, "Hugely impressive and really clever." Come on. You can't say that with a straight face unless you mean it. He does, it shows.

Then, there's dialogue. Beckinsale's "I give good wife" breathes, and Farrell's "If I'm not me, then who the hell am I" is the kind of line that gets phoned in when the actor knows the script sucks, but Farrell steps up and delivers as if this were an indie awards flick.

Screenwriting is by Kurt Wimmer who added depth of character to 'Salt', and Mark Bomback who kept the action in 'Live Free or Die Hard' and 'Unstoppable' clicking along nicely.

There's also some very cool cityscape visuals which go a long way to counter the knocks the film has taken re: a generic/derivative look. Not only that, but the new snippets of action are good. Plain ole good. Wiseman found a fresh approach.

From what I've seen 'Total Recall' brings it. This will end up being must-own on Blu-ray.

Image from 'Total Recall'

I'm liking Colin Farrell's trajectory these days. Had thought maybe he was taking a leave of absence, but he's bringing it these days. 'Fright Night' certainly seems more than I had hoped for. You can see it. The guy's got a handle on things.

The guy on the left, though. With the rifle. Could his elbows be any tighter, shoulders any higher, more tense? His back isn't even straight. He could have used a tad more weapons training. Not, necessarily, indicative of the quality of the film, but not a good thing either.

I nitpick, I know, but would that guy have that posture/bearing in another film?

International Trailer 'Fright Night'

Just about everything we've seen jammed into one trailer, plus a second or two that was too, what's the word?, edgy for domestic trailers. Just a second. Or two.
