Poster/Graphic for The Cannes Film Festival

Faye Dunaway as photographed by filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg in 1970.

Very Art Deco with the numbers font, and black and white image. Clean lines. Stark, emotional. Subdued, confident. Tense because the subject faces the left in contrast to the numbers which read toward the right.

The legs mimic the lines of the numeral 4. Both point to the left, which represents the past in visual compositions -- another nod to the 20s 30s and 60s.

The model averts her eyes, suggesting things kept secret. A strong sense of subtext comes from the fact that only one hand can be seen, the other being hidden behind the back, or, resting in the lap but covered or invisible (and conspicuously missing from the composition).

Elegant. Very European. An adept homage to the art of storytelling through imagery. Beautiful conception and execution.

Great analysis, Alan.

Dunaway was drop-dead gorgeous back in the day.
