Poster for 'The Myth of the American Sleepover'

So far, this is the only promo graphic for the movie. You can see a trailer here.

I'm not sure whether this is being considered for distribution. May never play in theaters. This is the feature debut for director David Robert Mitchell, who also wrote the script.

Picture has strong visual style, though. Shot with confidence. The actors received good direction and it shows.

I was impressed by the look of the trailer but wasn't sure if I wanted to post it. Then, I found this review at THR. Here's a clip:

It takes either courage or ignorance for a first-time director to tell the kind of story John Hughes, Richard Linklater, Judd Apatow and George Lucas have already done so well, but David Robert Mitchell nearly pulls it off in "The Myth of the American Sleepover."

That's the impression I get as well. Very close to the level of Hughes or Linklater. Possibly a more contemporary take on the subject. It definitely has that 'Breakfast Club' slash 'Dazed and Confused' vibe.

In this still, she only smiles after he turns back to look. Nice cinematic touch.

Here's another bit of the review:

Mitchell nails the blustery display of cursing and smoking many teens affect to mask their immaturity. In one of the film's funniest moments, a girl who brings marijuana to the sleepover loses serious street cred when she starts laying the seeds out on a mirror as if she was snorting cocaine.

Mitchell writes what he knows (and can handle actors and the camera).

'The Myth of the American Sleepover' took Best Ensemble Cast at SXSW and is getting very considered write-ups. It may not catch on commercially but look for future work from this director.
