Here's the first part of NPR's documentary on prostitution in Nashville.

Nashville: Up From Prostitution from NPR on Vimeo.

Here's the NPR write up:

Host Michel Martin speaks with NPR's Jacki Lyden about a new NPR series airing this week, "Nashville: Up from Prostitution." Lyden and National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez spent two months reporting on women trying to break the cycle of prostitution. This segment contains language and graphic descriptions that could be offensive or disturbing. You can find more stories from the "Nashville: Up from Prostitution" series on All Things Considered Monday, and on Morning Edition Tuesday and Wednesday.

'Thor' B-Rolls

B-Rolls usually have an awkwardness. Actors go through the motions of physical action scenes, or deliver dialogue heavy with portent without the support of vfx, music, or sound effects. It looks like a high school stage play rehearsal.

These two more so than most. There's so much green-screen in a movie like 'Thor' it's almost painful watching making-of footage. These guys just look so silly standing there, in character, reacting to the director's narration describing action from an invisible player who will be added months later using CGI.

But, that being said, shining through it all is a sense of hard work and conviction that goes into each second of raw footage. Especially in the second roll, in the scene with Hemsworth and Anthony Hopkins.

Kenneth Branagh shows a lot of confidence. Seems there was good energy on set.

All in all, easy to watch. Makes me want to see the movie, which, frankly, I had no intention of before.

'Priest' Imagery A Tribute to 'Blade Runner'

Scott Charles Stewart must love 'Blade Runner'.

The imagery in the first few seconds of the new featurette for 'Priest', directed by Stewart, is very reminiscent of the city-scape design in Ridley Scott's classic.

Same rain (although in 'Priest' it looks like snow, or possibly ash falling), same Japanese motif (paper umbrellas), same crowded streets, same incessant PA announcements emanating from giant video screens (possibly issuing the same spiel over and over, like the woman in 'Blade Runner' taking the giant happy pill again and again).

Check them out:

And this...

...is almost identical to this shot by Scott:

If that's not homage I don't know what is. Can't blame Stewart. 'Blade Runner' is one of the all-time greats.

So far, the visual style of 'Priest' is pretty impressive. If it has the same wow factor as the visuals in 'Blade Runner' it'll be a feather in Stewart's cap.

Poorly Done Poster for 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'

After yesterday's impressive trailer we get this. Looks like a highly photoshopped one sheet for a student film with guys in robot suits stomping miniature cities. Totally desktop effects. Composition is jangly. Each element slightly misplaced. No visual core. Scattered energy.

So. Trailer: surprisingly character-centric, beautifully done, visually stunning, gets under your skin. Poster: cheap, off-putting. Guess it's a wash.

Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal on Charlie Rose

Here's an interesting clip

The adaptation of I Heard You Paint Houses is called 'The Irishman'. With Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and De Niro, directed by...Martin Scorsese. Good news. Good to hear the gang's doing another crime thriller.

Imagery from 'The Illusionist'

Here are a few stills I haven't seen before.

Everything from this film has a quiet charm. A sureness. Imagery has a softer water-color style that breathes, invites the viewer in. Easier on the eyes than the punchier super-saturated high contrast animation Hollywood produces, which often keeps you at arm's length and seems to try too hard.

Trailer for 'Sleep Tight'

Hard to tell about this one. It has a psych element, that's clear, but does it live up to it.

When stories, characters, like this work well, it's mesmerizing. It's the kind of thing European filmmakers do well, especially the Spanish. They've given us a bunch of atmospheric creepfests in the past few years.

Here's hoping

'The King's (not free to download) Speech'

FBI raids 'The King's Speech' (alleged) uploader's apartment. Wired has the story. Here's a clip:

The FBI has raided the Los Angeles apartment of a Screen Actor’s Guild member the bureau believes was first to upload the Oscar-winning movie The King’s Speech, Black Swan, and other in-theater-only films to the Pirate Bay in January, according to interviews and sealed court records obtained by Wired.com.

All That Sex in 'Game of Thrones'

(A clip from) Scott Meslow on the sex in 'Game of Thrones':

It's important, however, to note the difference between depicting misogyny and endorsing misogyny. Game of Thrones is set in a world in which sex is the primary means by which women can assert their power. But it invites us to sympathize with women like Daenerys—not with her simpering, misogynistic brother or her stoic husband. It's by design that virtually all the women in the series can be divided into two categories: noblewomen and prostitutes. For women without money or a bloodline to protect them, sex is the greatest means of survival.

Lest I praise the honesty of the series' sexual dynamics too much, it's also worth noting that Game of Thrones sometimes toes the line between genuine plot advancement and Skinimax-style exploitation.

'Do Not Disturb' Poster

Montage done with good effect. Often tried, rarely succeeds. Has a creepy vibe, disjointed, but gels tonally.

Movie is comprised of five edgy shorts, shot by different directors, about goings on in a specific hotel room.

Trailer came out maybe a week or two ago. I watched a few seconds before losing interest. Usually don't go for this kind of product. When different directors tackle something it can come off gimmicky. A lot of times it seems like nobody is taking anything seriously. That's how the trailer struck me at the time.

Watched this morning and felt differently. Seemed to work. Poster was what really changed my mind. If someone cared enough to do that good a job with that graphic... Tips the scale just enough.

Love this.

Kristofferson just radiates confidence. He's in his element here.

With Dwight Yoakam, whose work I love, especially in movies with a country music element.

The same might be said for Hilary Duff (although, not by me as I've not seen her in anything nor heard her music).

Good to see Val Kilmer pop up here and there. Wonder if he sings in this.

With music by T. Bone Burnett. I'm there just for that. Soundtrack should be good.

Review of 'Stake Land'

A couple clips from a review of 'Stake Land' by Scott Tobias:

An odd, ambitious and only partially successful fusion of Terrence Malick poetics and 28 Days Later viscera, Stake Land works best as a skeptical take on Christian rapture fiction — think the Left Behind series, which imagines a pre-Judgment Day period of tribulation in which the righteous war with the forces of the Antichrist.
...
Only when it reaches too explicitly for profundity does Stake Land fall short, particularly in narration that says too much, suggests too little and doesn't justify its omnipresence.

Poster for 'Another Earth'

Isn't it damned convenient to have a duplicate planet earth? Doesn't that make existential examinations just that much easier to load up with passion and heartbreak? That much harder hitting? That much more emotional? But, why stop at two? Why not three or four? If two planets that are exactly the same sets the stage for a tear-jerking thought-provoking story, then having your protagonist deal the implications of three or four planet earths would peg the dramatic scale.

I don't know. You'll kindly excuse my sarcasm but, it seems like you could make up a story without a crazy crutch from left field.

Trailer plays well, if you can handle the oh so dramatic visuals of another Earth hanging in the sky above (our) Earth. My cynicism might be misplaced. The movie might be a punch in the gut. On the other hand, it could come off as a self-serving maudlin exercise (though a very well acted one I'm sure).

The thing is, with another earth hanging in the sky, possibly populated by people who are duplicates of us, it's just so manipulative. Our arms are practically twisted. We have to find the story moving. If we don't we (clearly) lack a sense of the cosmic.

On the flip side, if the writing/directing is handled well, an audience may love the manipulation. Really, it's why we go to the movies in the first place.

To digress: Wouldn't another planet the size of Earth, as close as it's depicted in the still above, cause massive tidal upheavals and coastal flooding that would kill millions (on both planets)? Just a literal-minded observation.

Maybe I'm wrong. I could be wrong. We need drama that shakes us to the core. Maybe 'Another Earth' will rise above. Look at 'Field of Dreams'. What a silly-ass idea that was. I saw it at the theater twice. Cried like a baby both times. Loved it.

We have enough schlock. Enough for any two planets of moviegoers. Hopefully, 'Another Earth' will dodge all the potholes of bullshit storytelling and deliver the goods. It's a fine line. Tough to do. If it succeeds it'll be great. People will sigh and cry and hold hands. If it fails, well, we know what it'll be.

Will find out soon enough.

Something about this poster says the movie will be a box office hit. Don't ask. Just, something...

Posters for 'À Bout Portant' (Point Blank)

Written and directed by Fred Cavayé who was the man behind 'Pour Elle' (Anything For Her), which was remade by Paul Haggis under the title 'The Next Three Days' starring Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks.

Have not seen either, but am guessing the original is a far more visceral experience. Check out this still.

Diane Kruger as Lisa Auclert (wife of protagonist Julien) in 'Pour Elle'. Could this look be produced by a Hollywood director? This vibe, energy. It sizzles with emotion. Carries tons of subtext. It's not even clear whether she wants her husband to believe she is innocent.
Very Euro. Complex. Smart. This is exactly why I like foreign film so much.

Hollywood can be so on-the-nose. Often, silly dialogue explains what should be done non-verbally.

Looking forward to seeing 'Pour Elle' and comparing it to 'The Next Three Days'.

'À Bout Portant' is getting strong reviews. Here's a couple stills.

The tags on the posters are a bit funny. The top one 'Il a 3 heures pour sauver sa femme' means 'He has 3 hours to save his wife'. In 'Pour Elle' (The Next Three Days), the man had, that's right, 3 days to save his wife. These guys can't catch a break. Next, it'll be 3 minutes.

Will check out Cavayé's work.

'The Conspirator' Review

Here's a snip from Dana Stevens' rundown of 'The Conspirator':

...the movie is stagey, preachy, and long on exposition. It's easy to imagine the bulleted list of questions to be handed out afterwards for high-school civics students to ponder: What is a writ of habeas corpus? But once you accustom yourself to this film's unhurried rhythm and old-fashioned Hollywood stolidity, The Conspirator is not without its pleasures...
