Compelling Poster for '127 Hours'

Probably the most compelling marketing yet for '127 Hours'. Trailers are just off-putting, thick with the promise of a grinding experience at the movies. Clips are either just as morose or almost irrelevant, even misleading, painting the movie as an adventure flick or breezy romance. Press around screenings, with people puking or fainting, ain't gonna help.

Poster, a still from a consumer video cam, has power. Snaps of protagonist's memories over his face, especially the ones near the eye, have a universal draw -- the memories of one's life played back during extreme duress. A successful technique for getting the viewer to feel like they are experiencing, or have access to, the character's memories. Good graphic.

It'll be difficult, though, to get other marketing materials click like this poster. Making the story appealing while not pretending the guy doesn't end up trapped in a hopeless situation (for days), sawing his arm off to facilitate an escape, is a hat-trick. A challenge I don't think producers are rising to just yet.

This one sheet is a step in the right direction.
