Same actors, same look, same settings, same writer/director/producer. These comedies are starting to look like episodes in a TV series. A good series, but still.

Honestly, I can't go to the theater for (something like) this. It looks fine -- polished, properly shot, script hits all the right marks, people say stuff, etc., but it doesn't have that gotta-see-in-a-theater feel. Maybe it's because it's got regular people in regular situations. I want regular people in extraordinary situations. I want big -- movie theater big. Enough with the spying on your neighbors for 90 minutes.

I'll catch this on...TV -- it won't feel like spying and it won't seem like 90 minutes (or 120 minutes with commercials). It'll just be a TV show. The Judd Apatow Show.

Pineapple Express

The thing about this movie is it has too much raunchy language and too many drug references for mainstream trailers to do it justice. It even has some violence (the inciting incident, no less) that's too graphic to hawk to people looking for a cool dumb stoner comedy. Until I saw the real-deal trailer at the official site I just didn't like this movie too much. Trailers were looking too labored on Apple, Yahoo, et al. I was thinking Judd Apatow (who produced) had run out of steam.

But when you're allowed to show drug references, along with the crude language, (and the inciting incident), without concern for who you might offend the trailer springs to life.

Right now this is looking like another hit for the Apatow/Rogen comedy express. This is 100% pure comedy -- no stems, seeds, political correctness, or any of that other shit. Don't waste your time with the watered-down trailers they're pushing around the web. Head over to Sony's crib for the real dope. (End of double entendres).

Apatovian Cuddly Raunch

Bob Mondello analyzes Judd Apatow's success, using the terms 'Apatovian' and 'Cuddly Raunch' to describe Apatow's work. Apatovian? The guy has a recognizable brand, to be sure, and I like the 'cuddly raunch' bit, but Apatovian sounds like an answer to a film school test question. I wouldn't go quite that far. Okay, okay...let's see -- Knocked Up is one of the most Apatovian movies I've ever seen. Told you -- it just doesn't work. It's too forced, just sits there. I vote for 'Juddesque'. That has a natural ring to it. I can live with Juddesque. Watch: Superbad is way more Juddesque than Talladega Nights could ever be. See, works. Juddesque. Be the first in your office to use it in conversation.

Judd Apatow is enjoying a lot of good press for 'Knocked Up'. Even the buttoned-down A.O. Scott likes it -- well, really likes it. His write-up fairly glows (but, if you want to see what he really thinks watch the video 'Movie Minutes' about halfway down the page).
