UpClose on NPR

NPR rolls out a new series called UpClose. As they describe it: A first-of-its-kind collaboration between NPR and KCRW to create an exclusive and ongoing series of conversations featuring on-air personalities with special guests from across the cultural landscape.

Here's the first show with Elvis Mitchell and Catherine Keener.

Ed Harris On The Treatment

Just what process did Ed Harris use to pick this hat for his character Virgil Cole in 'Appaloosa'? His interview with Elvis Mitchell on The Treatment is pretty good. Besides 'Appaloosa', Harris also talks at length about how the script for 'Pollock' came about, why he was compelled to make the movie, and what he had in common with the painter.

Jay Roach On The Treatment

Jay Roach is best known for comedies like 'Austin Powers' and 'Meet the Fockers'. I'm not even sure why he would want to do a picture about the hanging chads of the 2000 election, but it's called 'Recount' and plays on HBO. Elvis Mitchell talks with Roach on The Treatment.

Killer Of Sheep

Killer of Sheep poster

One of the most talked about movie releases was 'Killer of Sheep', directed by Charles Burnett. People raved. I almost bought the DVD but opted for some Hollywood schlock instead -- don't know what I was thinking -- 'Killer of Sheep' is one of the best movies I've never seen.

Here's the trailer.

Here's Charles Burnett with Elvis Mitchell on The Treatment a few days ago.

This movie is not like anything I've ever seen. The trailer scorches the mind. Looking forward to it.

Ridley Scott On The Treatment

Ridley Scott

I've been a fan of Ridley Scott since I saw 'Blade Runner'. (I had no idea who had directed the movie or who Scott was, but I had become a big fan -- I think not only of BR, but of movies made with visual panache). Here's a great interview with Elvis Mitchell on The Treatment. I especially like the discussion of the voiceover work and planned definitive version of 'Blade Runner' on DVD.

They also talk about how Scott started directing commercials. Here's a couple:

Mac 1984

Chanel No. 5

And here's one I'll bet you've never seen -- The Hovis 'Bike' Advert

Having accomplished something of a coup by writing all three Bourne movies, Tony Gilroy makes his directorial debut with 'Michael Clayton'. He talks with Elvis Mitchell on The Treatment on KCRW in Santa Monica. 'I go from not being able to work to not being able to stop working.'
