'Super 8' Brings the Funnest, Busiest 7-Eleven Ever
I have never seen a 7-Eleven this hopping. What an adventure it must have been to shop there. I want to go back to 1979, be a kid again, live where these kids live, go to their school, and buy a bunch of crap at this store every day, (and discuss making movies and girls, but not which books the girls are reading cause who gives a rat's ass).

'Super 8' at the Box Office
Or should I say 'Super 38'. Sorry.
The movie came in with $38m, right where I expected. Just could not see it doing $25-30m. (Some creative under-estimating by Paramount, probably). Over at ToH, Anne Thompson says "Paramount compared the numbers to District 9 ($37.4 opening, $115.6 million domestic), which makes sense, as that was another uniquely-marketed summer sci-fi sleeper." Heartily disagree. S8 should roll to $160m domestic pretty easily. Wouldn't be shocked if it did better.
As a side note, think S8 will play great overseas. Especially in Japan -- they love this type stuff.
I'm a bit surprised 'X-Men' only dropped 55%. Was thinking it might do as bad as 69%. But, I knew it couldn't stay above 50%, at least I got that right. Looking for a steep falloff next week. 'Green Lantern', as bad as it looks, should steamroll 'X-Men', which should come in around $8.5m. Good word of mouth should carry S8, which should show a slight dip of about 40-43% (I'm hoping for less, just love it when a movie like this comes along). All that would leave 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' scraping the bottom.

Shoo-In For Number One
Okay, it's not really a shoo-in but I'm getting the feeling 'Super 8' is going to do very well -- way better than studio predictions.
From a poll being run at Company Town:
To be honest, I always assumed the flick would pull down $40-50m opening weekend and cruise. Was a bit shocked when everybody said $25-30m. 'Soft tracking'...please.
Still say $35m+ is a fair bet, and I still wouldn't be surprised if it snags more than that, no matter what pundits are saying.
That 'Super 8' will rock the box office seems like a sure thing this morning. I get the feeling 'X-Men' will show a 65-69% drop. Word of mouth is just so dead on this movie. A falloff of 50% or less doesn't seem possible. That would leave a lot of tickets available. The buzz on 'Super 8', on the other hand, is white hot. People are nutso for the kids and the train wreck and the missing dogs and those funny cubes. I'm thinking they're going to line up for 'Super 8' and forget 'X-Men'.
That 'Super 8' will have legs seems like a sure thing, as well. I think people will want to see the movie more than once, even at the theater, even at full price.

Whaa...? A Glimpse of the 'Super 8' Monster? No way...
I thought there was a complete blackout on that. Thought JJ totally shut that idea down. Guess not. Unless... Maybe this isn't really a look at the monster. Maybe the footage is... Well, check it out. If I type one more ellipsis...

"It's also scary and suspenseful because of the, um...creatures"
Fairly typical interview with Zack Mills who plays Preston in 'Super 8' except for his comment at the 2:45 mark.
Slip of the tongue or very sharp marketing?

'Super 8' Interview with Joel Courtney
With a detailed description of the monster!
Ha ha. Not! It's spoiler free. No descriptions. Got you. So funny. You should see the look on your face. I crack me up.

6 Minute Clip From 'Super 8'
Just beautiful. Smart, funny, subtle, even deep. Delivers long before the train arrives -- something most filmmakers could not do.
Writing is as solid as camera, editing, sound.
Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney...wow.
