Trailer for 'We Need to Talk About Kevin'

Pretty much stops you in your tracks. Had thought of this as an intellectual indie with heavy pacing but, after this trailer, the flick feels like a psychological horror that'll (you'll excuse me) make your blood run cold.

John C. Reilly is oafish and clueless -- a simple man who is delighted with his family. Tilda Swinton, though... Wow, what an intense portrayal as a mother increasingly disturbed by her son's behavior. Her shots are chilling.

The story, handled by writer (with Rory Kinnear) director Lynne Ramsay, cuts to the bone. Second to second, as I pieced together more of the plot, figured out more of what was going on in this family, I was repulsed and hooked at the same time. That ain't bad for a trailer.




I love the part (at :26) where Eva/Swinton finds solace, even enjoyment, in the noise of a jack-hammer. Standing there, a pained smile of relief flickering, her incessantly crying infant in the stroller, two feet from a deafening construction site -- that's psych-horror. Beautifully executed, horrifying, captivating, can't take your eyes off it.

Okay, this isn't really the kind of thing that will draw huge crowds at the theater but it could become a favorite rental.

Continue to be impressed.



Just works somehow. They found the right energy.

While scene is playing seems sort of predictable, but once it's over it seems pretty fresh. I think audiences will be glad they saw this.

Actually think Jacob Wysocki carries this scene. He's running it. How often does that happen -- when a newbie kid can not only hold his/her own opposite a seasoned character actor but lead the guy around, own the scene?

And John C. Reilly is so good. Maybe it has something to do with the character Reilly is playing. Anyway, Wysocki could be one to watch.
