Non-Escapist Trailer for 'Escape Plan'

I thought it was a cool idea but this trailer makes 'Escape Plan' feel like a prison sentence.

First clue something is (criminally) wrong -- the runtime. Why should a movie like this need a 2:30 trailer? What's so complicated? Isn't this a by-the-numbers action flick? Then, after a minute or so, it becomes clear. The plot is so contrived that explaining it, even briefly, is a twisted exercise. Following the explanation, point by convoluted point, is tiring. As such, this trailer leaves one exhausted.

However, I like that Stallone plays a guy who "escapes from prisons for a living." That's rich. That, I like. The rest, though, I couldn't take 90 minutes of.

My verdict? The 'Escape Plan' looks flawed.

Arnold in 'Ten'

So, just this morning we get a trailer for 'A Good Day to Die Hard', which was very good, I thought. Tight, nice visuals, and (somehow) promising.

Now, we get a still from 'Ten', directed by David Ayer, which is a good sign -- 'End of Watch' being so cool in a dramatic vérité sort of way, and all.

Connection? Both are written by Skip Woods and I'm thinking the guy delivers. He's got chops for rhythm and the conventions of genre and maybe he's turned it up a notch. He must have something going on having been tapped to write 'Kane & Lynch' (with Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx) for F. Gary Gray no less. (The guy knows Story. I don't think F would work with just any writer).

So, what's 'Ten' about? From IMDb:

• Members of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house. 

Sure. That could work. 

Here's that picture. Arnold looks great, yes? Spiky, at least.

Come on. You gotta like this. Unpretentious, fun. My only quibble -- a black background would have been better, yes? Not sure white works. I suppose it's neither here nor there. I'd like this on the wall.

At :27 there's a shot of Schwarzenegger in shorts. Is that a first? I can't remember seeing him wearing shorts in a movie.

Anyway, can't help it, it's funny. He looks funny in shorts. But, it's a good funny.

Neon-Deco Pinball Machine Poster for Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Last Stand'

Very 80s title, but that's perhaps for the best.

Love the poster graphics. Nice layout, with a strong left to right forward push. Good video-game motif for the highway/dead bodies. 80s video game font as well -- I'm seeing a pattern. Wondering what, if any, game plot/camera elements will find their way into this.

The tag: "Some highways lead to hell. Some lead to much worse." works too. Not bad. (Look for AC/DC's 'Highway to Hell' in the soundtrack).

IMDb currently lists the title as 'The Last Stand' but this looks to be in flux. Plain ole 'Last Stand' is way better (and way less 80s).

Directed by Jee-woon Kim, who did the sizzling 'I Saw The Devil', which -- by itself -- makes this absolutely can't-miss, must-see, don't even think about it.

Written by (or, more correctly, writing supervised by) George Nolfi, who penned 'The Adjustment Bureau', 'The Bourne Ultimatum', 'Ocean's Twelve'. Another very good thing.

Make no mistake...Arnold is back. Really, he's already looking stronger than ever.

Must-own on Blu-ray.
