'The Hobbit' And The 48 fps Thing

Vincent Laforet is a videographer. His blog. He's seen all the versions of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' including the HFR, 48 fps. He gives a rather technical rundown of his impression but it may be worth a read if the subject interests you.

Here's a bit:

• In the opening hour of The Hobbit shown in 3D HFR – I don’t recall hearing a single sigh, or laugh.   Not one.    When I went to see the exact same seen with an audience of the same size on a 2D projection – I heard regular chuckles and laughter… why?

• For those of you who don’t know, Peter Jackson shot the Hobbit with dual RED Epic cameras on a 3D rig – and he chose to shoot it at 48 frames per second (twice the normal rate)  in an effort to render a sharper, more "realistic" image if you will, notably when motion is involved.   With 48fps comes a new shutter of 1/96th of second if shot at the traditional 180 degree shutter – or an image with an image that has half the amount of motion blur relative to shooting at 1/48th at 24 fps and of course twice as many frames projected every second.  You can read more about this process here and another great article on FXGuide here.   With the Hobbit Jackson shot at 1/64th of a second on a 270 degree shutter to split the difference if you will and get a bit more motion blur (and light.)

Tom Lowe's 'TimeScapes'

Have you seen this guy's work yet? Here's a bit of Vincent Laforet's write-up:

There are few people in this world that are as special as Tom Lowe.   Most of you know him as one of the pre-eminent time-lapse photographers/filmmakers out there who has been redefining the medium for years now on Timescapes.  (Tom was named  Astronomy Photographer of the Year last year.)     Tom has worked with Terrence Malick and many other pre-eminent filmmakers in fact (and given how humble Tom is – he’ll probably be upset I mentioned Terrence’s name.)   Tom is also an author, a Gulf War Veteran and generally a Zen master.   Tom has lived outside of his pickup truck for more than a year, on top of freezing mountains and in the desert for months at a a time.  Granted he’s gotten to witness some of the most beautiful sites that our land offers.

Tom is out to raise the bar even higher now – with his 4K film "Timescapes" that he’s been working on tirelessly for close to two years now.    He’s been shooting with Kessler motion control cranes and dollies,  lenses from Canon / Leica / RED / Duclos, and Arri Master Primes, with RED’s Epic camera,  the Canon 5D MKII  and the PL-modified Canon 1D MKIV by Denz as well – to produce some of the most gorgeous footage I’ve ever seen shot on this continent in the last decade.
