Lush Looking 'Rush'

They really did a nice job capturing the look of the 70s. I'm sure cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle shot on film but post was likely done digitally. End result is lush and crisp with colors that are both muted and saturated -- the best you could hope for. I also like the grainy look. Apt for the period.

Too Action-Packed And Too Melodramatic And So So Good

New trailer for Ron Howard's 'Rush' is an odd blend of loud racing shots with super slo-mo rubber burns, screaming engines and tearing metal, squished with oh so intense talking-head character bits, all jammed together quick quick cut. It's good, no doubt about that, but does it belong in the same trailer?

Who knows...

The observation, however, leads me to wonder why I even noticed such a thing. It's because I was watching so closely. I can't think of another recent film I've been so wound up to see, that looked so good in trailers. Howard appears to have delivered a compelling drama loaded with race sequences that, second to second, will leave the audience breathless. Really, he could could have made 'Rush' either pure character-centric with a sprinkling of racing, or pure racing-centric with a dash of melodrama and it would have worked either way. 'Rush' has both.

I'm thinking that, as soon as you get to know and like the people in this movie it will cut to a racing sequence, and as soon as you get into the racing action and want to see more it will cut back to a dramatic two-shot. Then, you'll get completely caught up in that and...cut to: Next cool shot.

As such, this is a jangly trailer for a movie I'm very much looking forward to. 'Rush' should score. Word of mouth will probably be excellent.

Ron Howard Talks 'Rush'

Howard did such a good job -- each scene vibrates with life. Peter Morgan's writing pops -- subtext is as compelling as the race footage. Every shot is a money shot.

This movie practically walks and talks. Can't wait.

New 'Rush' Trailer

Much more racing oriented than the first US trailer and, yes, this looks good. That the story is infused with human drama -- Niki Lauda's (Daniel Brühl) terrible accident and fairly miraculous return to racing as well as his rivalry with James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) -- in order to hook an audience 'Rush' needs nail-biting footage of F1 cars roaring around the track.

Director Ron Howard, clearly, has a way with the action, and writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Solace) certainly can make the relationship between the drivers compelling.

Fantastic trailer. 'Rush' looks to deliver on both counts.

Our Own 'Rush'

The international cut was punchier, more to the point. One of the best teasers I've seen.

This one flirts with being long-winded. Not bad, but too early for a trailer with this depth. Might have been better to stick to the brass tacks of racing before delving into character so deeply. (It's as if they got the international and domestic trailers mixed up).

Still, though, good enough. To me, great stuff, can't wait.

Judging from the footage the movie is aptly named. Wow, beautiful.

Here's the rundown:

• Set against the 1970's golden age of Formula 1 racing, "Rush" portrays the fast-paced and exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivalries the sport has ever witnessed – that of James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and their illustrious Formula 1 racing teams, McLaren and Ferrari. A privileged, charismatic and handsome English playboy, Hunt could not be more different from his reserved and methodical opponent, Austrian born Lauda. "Rush" follows their personal lives both on and off the track and charts their rivalry from its inception in Formula 3. Here they competed viciously against each other until Lauda's business acumen and surgeon like precision behind the wheel propelled him all the way to Formula 1; eventually landing him the number one spot at Ferrari. However it was not long before rambunctious golden boy Hunt fought his way into Formula 1, and into the hearts of a nation, dramatically seizing the championship from Lauda and proving to the critics, and more importantly himself, that there was real substance beneath the stylish exterior.
