'The Frozen Ground' Seems Solid Enough

Yes, Nicolas Cage does make a lot of flicks and some aren't that substantial, but this one looks good to me. Partly because it's based on a true story about serial killer Robert Hansen, partly because John Cusack is selective of his projects and scripts, and partly because the trailer just has that vibe.

Trailer is strangely edited, almost non-professional looking. Could be an effort to keep it verité and avoid Hollywood gloss considering the subject.

Has the potential to be excellent and the best Nicolas Cage flick in a while. It's cool how much John Cusack looks like Hansen.

Trailer for 'The Prey' (La Proie)

Looks very good and seems fair material for a Hollywood remake. On that note, plot reminds me of Nicolas Cage's upcoming 'Stolen'. Here's that logline:

• A former thief frantically searches for his missing daughter, who has been kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a taxi. 

I read somewhere that Cage's character just got out of prison for robbery (of some kind) and his former partner (who didn't get caught) kidnaps his daughter in order to get Cage to give him his half of the money.

These elements kind of line up with what's in the trailer, though it seems the protagonist in 'The Prey' has completely different motivations for breaking out of prison. 'The Prey', however, seems much more complex (in that typically French/Euro way).

Directed by Eric Valette (One Missed Call). Opens this summer in Japan and the UK. We may see a theatrical release this fall, though it should already be available on disc.

So. Quien es mas loco? Nicolas Cage o Mickey Rourke.

This burning question may be answered in 'Marble City', about a guy (from the looks of it, Cage) who is released from prison and goes hunting for the man who sent him there.

Flick is directed by Ryûhei Kitamura (The Midnight Meat Train) so don't expect punches to be pulled.

Poster looks like an early photoshopped placekeeper (I mean, that can't be Cage's body -- though I like the prison tats, and the gun is too big) but, for what it's worth... Something about this seems relevant, though. I like it.

What does 'Nic Cage executes Marble City' mean? He kills the whole place? O....kay....

I'm betting they'll be keeping the tagline: From revenge comes peace. This sounds like a central story element. You know, we'll be seeing Cage sitting cross-legged on the floor meditating on how he's gonna whup Rourke's ass and thereby soothe his (Cage's, that is) tormented soul. Yeah, that's where this movie will go.

Really, especially with Rourke's involvement, this may be one of Cage's finest, at least when it comes to nutty-kooky action.

At any rate, when you get a poster, even if it's a cheesy mock-up, a full year before release, that's got to be a good thing.

I've had high hopes for this one. Based on the true story of Robert Hansen who is believed to have kidnapped women and released them in remote Alaskan forests to be hunted.

Written and directed by Scott Walker, who is on his first feature. For this kind of movie I think that's a good thing.

Stills look very good, display a command of things.

I know. This could be the poster for a lot of Nic Cage's movies, a couple of which have slipped lately. This one, though, will put butts in seats and Cage back...on top of the B-summer-popcorn-action cheese fests.

Directed by...wait for it...Simon West (Con Air, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2). You got to admit, the guy has a way. His movies have very pure lines. Apply that visual sensibility to this plot...:

• Master thief Will Montgomery is just released from the State penitentiary after serving a 10 year sentence, is contacted by Jonah, his ex comrade in crime, who is holding Will’s teenage daughter ransom in a hijacked taxi cab. Jonah will only surrender her when Will reveals the whereabouts of the 20 million dollars he contrived to conceal from their last robbery.

...and you get a connect-the-dots fun time at the movies. There's something about that synopsis. I kinda wish I had dreamed that up. Simple yet loaded with possibilities, reversals, reveals, etc.

West has it going on these days. His upcoming 'Thunder Run', about the capture of Bagdad at the onset of the Iraq involvement, stars Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington, and Matthew McConaughey and looks to have potential.

This one should work. I like the title better than, say, 'Taken'. More direct, easier to understand. And, remember: 12 hours, $10 million, and 1 kidnapped daughter -- what more do you need to know.

This one hit today. I like how, at :10, the guy with the shotgun just stands there. You know -- a flaming motorcycle being ridden by a skeleton (a flaming skeleton) just landed in front of you, and you just stand there? Maybe he's waiting to stop peeing in his pants before running away.

Also interesting -- the skull motif in the engine design, at :12 (used as the still in the video player).
