Some Real Pop

Tarantino delivers on a level I would not have expected. There's an organic tension that doesn't even hint at the kind of theatrics we're accustomed to from this director. Waltz plays the suck up buffoon for reasons unknown and it comes off perfectly. Foxx carries the scene effortlessly. Even the muscle with a stick seems natural, avoids that comic book tough-guy vibe. And, DiCaprio...wow. Can he prance about or what?

All this is due to Tarantino. It's the directing. Of course, camera/editing simply click. A pleasure to watch.

The dialogue has its cheeky moments, too, like "tasty refreshment". Did they even have the word 'tasty' back then. Who said 'tasty' in the 1860s? Not that T cares a whit about anachronism, mind you, but still, it feels like he wanted us to notice. It comes off as a self-reference, a bit of fun. Remember the 'tasty burger' scene in 'Pulp Fiction'. You know the one.



This clip has changed my mind about 'Django Unchained'. I still think X-mas is an odd release date for such a hardcore genre flick but now at least I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. I'm thinking this will be a good one. Not that Tarantino misses by much, or often, but it's hard for every flick to play as well as, say, 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Django Unchained' looks to do just that.

'Django Unchained' Character Posters

There's a full set, but I like this one. Would not have expected Tarantino to want this look. Figured he'd go for something less 'studio'.

The thick sepia tone is okay but it looks better in pure black and white.

On X-Mas?

Love this trailer. Better than the first. But, all I thought while watching is, who will want to see this on Christmas Day? Who wants to see Tarantino's take, that brand of ultra-stylized hyper-action and dialogue, in a movie about race and violence, a movie filled to the brim with killing, on that particular day?

For instance, take this gem. Who, sitting there with visiting family, people -- your parents, grand kids, whatever -- you only see once a year when this line floats by: "Why don't they (black slaves) just rise up and kill the whites?"

Really. That's what people are going to want to see.

Django Goes Up Against This?

Who would want to see a Tarantino flick on X-mas day anyway? And, not just any Tarantino movie but one about a slave (a Western on X-mas?) who sets out to kill a bunch of (white) people in order to get his wife back? I mean, the family is in town for that once-a-year visit and you're going to see a shoot 'em up? That opening date may bite back.

Meanwhile, 'Les Misérables' is looking better all the time. Django may end up relegated to 'rent-when-get-around-to' status.

Overexposed, with crazy color and subtitles, but there's an elegance here missing from earlier trailers. Tarantino's crash zooms are still there but somehow they fit better, flow better.

New 'Django Unchained' Trailer

I just realized -- don't know why I hadn't noticed -- at :55, that's Franco Nero with Jamie Foxx. Nero played Django in Sergio Corbucci's 1966 'Django'.

If anything this is over-stylized even for a Tarantino flick. (I mean, a 'shwoo-shwoo-shwoo' sound effect when a six-shooter is twirled and holstered? Kinda cartoonish, but I suppose that would be the point. And, that's my point: The approach could work against the movie. I'm thinking everybody was looking forward to a movie with a more serious spine. Something that could stand with the best of the genre. There may be some griping).

But...good eye candy (normal for a Tarantino flick).
