'Dolphin Tale'

I just learned there is a movie being made about a boy who inspires a community to build a prosthetic for a dolphin who lost its tail in a lobster trap.

'Dolphin Tale' (I know...) stars Morgan Freeman, Kris Kristofferson, Ashley Judd, and Harry Connick Jr., and is set for release in 2011.

It really happened. The dolphin lives at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida. Here's an account.

'I Love You Phillip Morris'

Steven Russell in a Texas prison, from which he has escaped (just walking out the front door without a weapon or hostage) four times. NPR talked with him:

"Everything comes to me through something just like that slot right there," Russell says, turning around to look at his narrow portal to the world. "My mail, my food, my books, everything. My radio, my commissary. And you don't ever reach out and touch," he says with a giggle.

Russell's excited about the movie — what he's seen of it. He particularly thinks Carrey gets the daydreaming thing: Russell says he often sits and consciously starts to daydream, determined to think about something other than his 144-year sentence. (One hundred and 19 years of it is for the escapes.)

I like it. Jodie Foster is her usual intense captivating self. Mel Gibson's character looks more substantial and layered and endearing than many the actor has portrayed.

Trailer is a pleasant surprise. Caught off guard by how affecting it is. If the movie delivers what the trailer promises, Oscar nominations should follow (despite recent events). I guess that might depend largely on release date. If movie is forgotten by following awards season, 'The Beaver' may still give a boost to careers.
